Breakfast and Asheville Rotary Clubs, The Hundred Movement, and Community Volunteers Display Art at Asheville Mall Jan. 16 – 31
Asheville, NC, Monday, January 16, 2023 — A small but serious exhibit is on display at Asheville Mall symbolizing the plight of Human Trafficking. Breakfast Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Asheville, and area volunteers, including those from The Hundred Movement and My Daddy Taught Me That, are raising awareness of human trafficking and its prevention through original artwork. The exhibit will be on display at the Asheville Mall from January 16 – 31 in recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.
According to the Red Sand Project, an estimated 40.3 million people are enslaved by human traffickers. Through greater awareness, people are better able to ask questions, connect, and reduce the vulnerabilities that lead to human exploitation. According to Amanda Gopal, executive director of The Hundred Movement:
- Human Trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exert control over victims
- Trafficking is happening in Western North Carolina
- It takes place in the city, suburbs, and rural areas in homes, hotels, and fake businesses
The Asheville Mall has provided space for the exhibit, which is located between Dillard’s and belk. General Manager, Sam Cerniglia, and his team have also posted signs throughout the mall leading toward the exhibit. The signs, courtesy of Signarama of Asheville, quote some of the startling facts of human trafficking.
